Gulf Trip - Day Six - January 7, 2022

It was freezing this morning….literally freezing! Our ropes were all frozen and we had to pour hot water on them to be able to untie Tracy’s boat from ours. We went through 7 locks today!

1. Jamie Whitten Lock

2. Sonny Montgomery Lock

3. John Rankin Lock

4. Fulton Lock

5. Glover Wilkins Lock

6. Amory Lock (recently renamed Thad Cochran Lock)

7. Aberdeen Lock

While locking through Jamie Whitten Lock, there was water shooting out of the wall and as soon as it hit our bow deck, it froze. It took almost all day for the ice to thaw. It was hard to get Tracy tied up to us in the locks because his ropes were still frozen as well. I didn’t get a chance to make notes going through the locks today because we were so busy with so many, but we did get a lot of Facebook Live Videos.

We decided to find an anchorage near Aberdeen Locks; however, when we got there, we couldn’t find anything……so…..we decided to lock through and find something southbound. We were worried that we would be driving past dark, but James spotted an anchorage just before dark and we looked it up on Active Captain (McKinley Creek Cut-off.) It was a narrow cove, so we had to drive straight in. Tracy was still able to tie up to us. Beef stew for dinner tonight! Our anchor held great in 8’ of water. We dropped a stern anchor just to be safe and didn’t move at all through the night.
